Study Finds Cognitive Therapy Helpful in Treating Patients Suffering from Depression

Five years ago, World Health Organization statistics showed that that every 40 seconds someone some where committed suicide. The organization says suicide rates jumped 45 percent between 1955 and the year 2000.
A WHO study found that mental disorders, particularly depression and substance abuse, are associated with more than 90 percent of all cases of suicide. What's more, people who have attempted suicide are at a high risk for attempting it again. Now there's a new study about a form of treatment that appears to cut that risk by half. Most suicides are related to mental health problems. VOA Producer Zulima Palacio reports that even though research indicates that most mental illnesses are first manifested during ages 15 to 25, only a few universities have established prevention and mental health programs. Motivated by her own experience and hoping to be able to help other youngsters in time, Alison created a student group and soon after that, a website known as Active Minds on Campus, which includes extensive lists of students to contact through e-mail.
A Place to Just 'Hang Out' for the Mentally Impaired

Each Wednesday and Saturday night at a most unusual nightclub called The Roxy, 60 or so people with mental illness who live in Trinity Services, Incorporated's, group homes can just "chill out," with friends and invited guests.
They drink sodas and sparkling grape juice at an old, wooden bar; eat snacks and watch live baseball on TV from cafe tables; listen to professional bands that come in, or grab a guitar themselves and take the stage. Couples can share romantic conversations, sometimes a kiss. A few counselors and social workers tend bar, calm fears, defuse squabbles.

Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath have created an epic crisis for Louisiana's health and hospital system, as officials try to locate, and care for, evacuees with physical and mental illnesses, and head off potential disease related to the floods. VOA's Adam Phillips spoke with the director of the state agency responsible for overseeing those efforts.
