Farming Town Experiments to Become Energy Independent

Reynolds, Indiana is a small town in the Midwestern United States, boasting a population of just 550. But this tiny town is the focus of a state-run program, dubbed "Biotown USA", aiming to provide power from agricultural-based fuel. There are three parts to the program. Legislation introduced this week in the U.S. Congress would provide emergency relief to American farmers in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast and in other parts of the country that are also suffering from extremes of weather. Named or not, weather disasters last year prompted Congress to appropriate $3 billion in emergency disaster relief for American farmers. That figure is expected to rise dramatically in the wake of Katrina. A full assessment of that hurricane's impact on the U.S. agriculture industry is not expected for weeks.

 

4-H Program Strives to Develop US Youth

4-H CloverEvery year, all across the United States, county and state fairs offer thousands of Americans practical entertainment, such as farm and garden exhibits and 4-H shows. 4-H is a national youth activities program.  The 4 H's, "head, heart, hands and health,” represent resources that these young people are encouraged to develop through farming activities, such as raising animals.
